Just as mysteriously, a knot tied in a branch. Two other (real) photographers caught the wound-up root parts down into the ground. I was oblivious when I took these photos, but if you zoom in on the right-hand photo you can glimpse it coming down left-to-right from behind the tree trunk on the left.
