On the 2012 hike, some of us followed a trail somewhat up the hill from the valley floor. John Hall and I got on it a bit earlier than some of the others ("sidetrail" marker) and ran into an unclimbable, gateless fence that forced us straight back to the road. We went back up the fence on the other side and, after a false start, found the continuation of the trail ("2nd try" marker) and followed it the rest of the way.
