I've always assumed this was named for "Ka Iwi Coast," and was the same as
"Kaiwi Channel," where "ka" = "the" and "iwi" = "bone" (or "long line of surf"?)." But the sign has been there a long time;
one would think it would have been corrected by now, if in error. So, short for "Ka `I`iwi," "The scarlet Hawaiian honey creeper"?
Hard to believe. But the only other sense of "`iwi" I can find is "twitching of the eye."
